01What is Blackmonday
Blackmonday is a multiplayer browser game set in New York in 1987. Every player shares the same stock market, the same streets and the same courthouse. Your goal is to end the season with the highest net worth possible, whether by trading stocks, running businesses or turning to crime.
The game runs in real time: prices move every few seconds, news breaks in The Ledger and other players can help you, con you or turn you in at any moment.
02Your first day: energy, stress and respect
Almost every action costs energy (☕), which refills on its own over time. Crimes and risky moves raise your stress; high stress lowers your odds and, at the limit, causes burnout. A night at the club helps you unwind.
Every accomplishment earns reputation, which raises your respect. More respect unlocks bigger businesses, more lucrative crimes and better courses. Your attributes (Analysis, Charm, Nerve and Influence) grow with courses and lifestyle items.
03The stock market: buy low, sell high
On the Market, every company has a live price, a candlestick chart and its own news. Every purchase pays the spread and a brokerage fee, and realized profits are taxed. Big orders move the price, so splitting them up and being patient pays off.
Use limit orders to buy the dip and stop losses to protect yourself. Solid companies pay dividends to whoever holds the shares on the record date. Your portfolio shows how much you’re up or down on every position.
04Businesses: passive income and fronts
Businesses earn hourly revenue that piles up in the till until you collect it. Upgrade them to earn more, hire a manager to collect for you and invest in accounting and security.
Besides making money, businesses are fronts for laundering. With enough respect you can take one public and sell part of its shares to other players.
05Crime and dirty money
Crimes pay in dirty money and show you the odds of success, the energy cost and the risk of getting caught red-handed before you commit. Some have special effects: a rumor tanks a stock, insider trading reveals the next headline, accounting fraud inflates your listed company.
You can attempt crimes above your respect, but the odds drop sharply and the risk of arrest climbs. Any crime can leave evidence, and dirty cash sitting around raises suspicion.
06Money laundering
Dirty money can’t buy stocks or businesses. To use it, launder it: through your front businesses, in small amounts, with a money changer, casino chips, artwork or an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
Each method has a different fee, speed and risk. Laundering far more than a business really earns triggers an audit. Spreading it around is the secret.
07Police, lawyers and the courts
High suspicion and evidence open investigations with a deadline. If the evidence is strong when time runs out, an arrest warrant is issued. Once arrested, you pick a lawyer: expensive ones are more accurate and hold more meetings, which reveal the evidence and the judge’s profile.
At trial, the judge asks about the real facts of the case. Denying something the prosecution can prove is perjury and makes the sentence worse. A lawyer on retainer helps get small charges dropped before they become a case.
08The plaza, nightclubs, fights and syndicates
In the plaza and at nightclubs you chat with other players, buy drinks, run scams, spy and challenge people to trading duels. You can also pick a fight or attack someone, but bodyguards and weapons change the outcome, and injuries take you out of action for a while.
Syndicates bring players together with a shared vault and perks like a legal team and police contacts. Together you can coordinate speculative attacks on stocks.
09Gambling and loans
The numbers game draws several times a day and slot machines pay out instantly. The house always takes its cut: only bet what you can afford to lose, since it’s all game money.
You can lend money at interest to other players. Rates that are too high count as loan sharking, the borrower may default, and when you go to collect they might report you or start a fight.
10The Coin
The Coin is the premium currency. It buys convenience and style: daily-limited energy refills, a VIP lawyer, avatars, frames and titles. It doesn’t buy attributes, game money or guaranteed success.
If you’d rather not pay, earn The Coin through daily contracts, login streaks, achievements and season prizes, or buy it from other players on the market.
11Seasons and Black Monday
Each season lasts about 28 days. On a secret date near the end, Black Monday strikes: the entire market crashes within minutes. Strange headlines and abnormal volatility are the warning signs.
When the season closes, the biggest fortunes win The Coin and permanent titles, and the world starts over. Your account, The Coin, achievements and cosmetics carry over.
Quick tips for beginners
- Don’t sit on full energy: a full tank doesn’t refill.
- Finish the three daily contracts: they pay cash, reputation and The Coin.
- Open a laundromat early: it’s cheap, earns every hour and doubles as a front.
- Launder dirty money quickly; cash on hand raises suspicion.
- With an investigation open, stop committing crimes and reduce the evidence.
- Keep clean money for lawyers and bail. A public defender rarely saves anyone.
